Pivotal Health Provider with Student

Frequently asked questions

How does the Pivotal Health service work?
  • Step 1: Download & Schedule Your student downloads the Pivotal Health app to their phone. When they aren't feeling well, they simply open the app, describe their symptoms with a couple of clicks, and choose an appointment time that fits their class schedule. (Students can also call or text us at 888-688-4746 to schedule or to ask questions.)

  • Step 2: We Come to Them A licensed clinician (typically a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) arrives at their dorm room or apartment at the scheduled time. We treat urgent needs like strep, flu, UTIs, and even perform physicals or stitches on-site.

  • Step 3: Focus on Recovery After the visit, we automatically send a summary to the app and can electronically send any necessary prescriptions to their pharmacy of choice. There are no surprise bills or insurance claims—just unlimited care for the semester.

Does this replace my student's current health insurance?

No, the Pivotal Health Direct Care membership is not a health insurance plan . We strongly recommend your student retains their health insurance (at least a high-deductible or catastrophic health insurance plan) for major medical issues, such as surgeries or emergency room visits . Our membership covers their day-to-day urgent care, primary care, and mental health needs provided by our clinicians .

Are there per-visit fees or copays?

No. Once the semester membership fee is paid, your student gets unlimited urgent care and primary care house calls and telehealth visits for no extra charge. Most diagnostic labs (like rapid strep or flu tests) are also included in the membership cost.

Can your providers prescribe medication?

Yes. Our clinical team, which includes nurse practitioners and physician assistants, can prescribe medications just like a doctor. We electronically send prescriptions to the pharmacy of your student's choice. Our providers also know where the closest pharmacies are if your student is not sure.

My student lives in a secure dorm; can you still reach them?

Yes. Pivotal Health providers can go into all university dormitories and apartment buildings. We treat students where they are most comfortable—whether that is a dorm room, apartment, or even a fraternity or sorority house.

What if my student needs to see a specialist?

If a condition requires specialized care (like orthopedics or gastroenterology), we can make a referral to specialists at any health system or clinic in Wisconsin. We are not tied to one specific hospital network, so we help your student find the right care.

Does the Direct Care membership include mental healthcare?

The membership includes support for anxiety, depression, and stress, addressing the growing mental health crisis among college students. We act as a first line of defense if your student is experiencing one of these issues. Our providers will triage the situation and determine the initial diagnosis and treatment plan including prescribing medications (if needed). While we do not do therapy, we have multiple partner organizations that we can refer the patient to for therapy if needed.

Is there a phone number to call or to text to ask additional questions?

You can call or text our Patient Support team at 888-688-4746. The team can answer any of your questions and help you get set up with a membership.
